For some of you, this phrase probably rings a bell. The annual “test of fitness” put on by CrossFit HQ and curated by Dave Castro. 5 weeks of workouts that challenge your skills, push your limits, and inspire your gains. You’re familiar with the excitement and anticipation of the live Open Announcements and the butterflies you get right before 3,2,1 GO!

For many of you though, you might be wondering…What IS the CrossFit Open?

The CrossFit Open is an awesome way to put all of your training and progress to the test! Each week for 5 weeks, CrossFit HQ will release a workout and all participants worldwide have four days to complete the workout and submit scores to the online leaderboard. The Open is for ALL levels. Yes, even those of you who just graduated The Academy or only have a few months of CrossFit classes under your belt! Every workout has a Scaled Division that makes this event approachable to even the newest of newbies. What’s also cool is that the online leaderboard is completely customizable so that you can measure your results against your past efforts, your CrossFit friends, other BRICK members across the locations, athletes in the Chicago area, and even the best athletes in the world!

WHY SHOULD YOU DO IT?

IT’S ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY AND FUN!
Most importantly, the Open promotes a sense of camaraderie and community. Crossfitters across all BRICK locations will share the experience of these 5 workouts. Our main focus is YOU guys here in Chicago!—getting as many members as possible to come together, support each other, be vulnerable together, compete together, and be awesome together!

We’re excited to strengthen our community by hosting The Clash of the Creatures! It’s an in-house competition in congruence with The Open. This is an opportunity to test your fitness, be a part of something bigger, and have some fun.

Who: Everyone!* Sign up to be on a team at the gym!
What: A 5-week series with…
-Competition days that will be made a little extra special.
-Prizes for GRIT, Most Spirited, MVP, overall winners, etc.
-And of course, an After Party.
When: Fridays (Weeks 1-4), Saturday (Week 5)
How: Pre-register for the class time you’ll be attending each week. If you miss your team class time, you can attend another class time and your score will still count for your team. You may also complete the workout at anytime between Friday and Monday during Open Gym hours.

Both The Clash of the Creatures and The CrossFit Open are an opportunity for athletes of all levels to participate in something fun and challenging. While The Open is a competition for some of the best CrossFitters in the world to prove that they are the best of the best, it’s also so much more than just a competition. If you’re not convinced to join in the fun yet, then here a just a few more reasons to sign up…

NEW BENCHMARKS
Each Open workout is a new benchmark. Just like any other workout we do in class; it’s testable and re-testable. The workouts are designed to challenge your current level of fitness—strength, stamina, speed, mobility, and skill. You may discover some weaknesses, but you will definitely achieve things you never thought were possible! By the end of the 5-week Open season, you’ll have 5 new benchmarks that you can look back on, retest, and use to guide you in developing your fitness as you move forward.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH
That being said, an important part of progressing is to identify the areas that limit you. We can’t get better if we only do what we’re good at. We need to highlight our weaknesses—not to embarrass us, but to help us see where we need to become better and to set new goals. The Open workouts will hit you with a different test of fitness each week (gymnastics, strength, endurance, and Olympic lifting). Some things may be in your wheelhouse and you’ll crush those workouts, but there will also be the workouts that bring you to a screeching halt. And that’s okay! It’s a good thing to experience both ends of the spectrum so that you can come away from the Open knowing what areas you need to focus on and what areas you rock at. Turn your weaknesses into strengths, and make your current strengths even stronger!

SET NEW GOALS AND STRATEGIZE
The Open is also the perfect time to set and achieve your goals. Set goals across the 5 weeks—even if it’s just committing to completing all 5 workouts, or you want to attempt all workouts RX. You can set goals for each individual workout—how fast do you want to go, how consistent do you want to be in your rep scheme, how many reps do you want to get, what time are you aiming for? Set goals for each individual movement—get your first set of consecutive double unders, PR your snatch, get your first muscle up, etc. The Open is a great platform and a truly special environment to test your fitness. Use it to motivate you this year, and moving into next year!
