Rick has been coaching CrossFit for over 10 years. He competed in the 2008 CrossFit games and was on the CrossFit Seminar Staff for two years. Rick has coached CrossFit classes in both commercial and corporate gyms. He has a deep understanding of the CrossFit methodology and most importantly, how to scale properly to achieve the best results. Rick’s athletic background includes rugby and was a defensive lineman at De La Salle. Rick also has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.
Grant is a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer. He is a true student of CrossFit. He also holds the following certificates: CrossFit Scaling Course, CrossFit Spot the Flaw Course, CrossFit Gymnastics, CrossFit Running Course, CrossFit Lesson Planning Course, and CrossFit Aerobic Capacity. Grant also holds a Master’s degree in Sociology. Prior to becoming a full-time CrossFit coach, Grant worked with individuals and families impacted with autism or other special needs. Grant’s athletic background includes rugby and wrestling.
Ronald is a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and also holds a Level 1 Certification through MovNat. He is a fitness fanatic; his interests include alpine mountaineering, endurance racing (marathons and ultra trail runs), obstacle course racing, soccer and outdoor fitness. So far, he’s climbed three of the world’s seven summits, is a 3x Spartan Race Elite Ultra Finisher and appeared on NBC Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge Seasons 1 and 2. Ronald holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
Alicia is a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. Alicia has been a part of Brick NorCal since day one. She assisted with the planning, buildout and development of the gym. Prior to joining Brick NorCal, she was a personal trainer before moving into corporate fitness and wellness. She managed the fitness and wellness program for Oracle’s Bay Area locations. Alicia holds a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a Masters degree in Sport Management.

What is CrossFit?
Is CrossFit for me?
Yes. Everyone can do CrossFit regardless of age, injuries and current fitness level. The program can be modified for each athlete to help him or her become fitter and healthier. Grandparents and Olympians—and everyone in between—can perform modified versions of the same workout.
Is CrossFit safe?
Yes. At Brick NorCal, credentialed trainers provide precise instructions and coaching to help our members move safely and efficiently. All movements can be scaled and modified. We take special care not to push people beyond their limits that would risk injury.
What if I can’t do something listed in the workout?
All Brick NorCal CrossFit workouts can be modified for people of any age and ability. Adjusting a workout for a specific person is called “scaling,” and it allows very experienced athletes and beginners to train side by side. Our skilled coaches can quickly adjust each workout to reflect your needs, goals and current abilities. In general, we will help you choose a load that’s manageable for you or use a percentage of the weight prescribed. We will substitute movements you can’t do with similar movements that are available to you. For example, push-ups can become knee push-ups as you build the strength required for the full movement. In every workout, strive for consistent mechanics before adding weight or increasing the load.
How do I get fitter with CrossFit?
CrossFit improves general physical preparedness (GPP). We have designed our program to elicit as broad an adaptational response as possible. CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of 10 fitness domains: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. CrossFit was developed to enhance an individual’s competency at all physical tasks. People who do CrossFit are prepared for all challenges, whether they come in the the gym, on a playing field or as part of daily life.

Brick is a small, intimate gym, very welcoming to new members at the same time it is creating a strong community. As a bonus, they welcome guest visits to other Brick facilities around the country, so if your travels take you to NYC, CHI, LA, Boston, etc you can keep your fitness program going. The team at Brick Fitness Center has managed to pull together all the ingredients to be a top tier fitness partner – great coaches, beautiful, clean facility, no attitude, and a strong community!
My story… a year ago I was thinking about a better, more routine fitness regime. I had heard about cross fit and was pretty intimidated, but when Brick opened a few blocks from my house, I couldn’t resist checking it out. Wow, am I glad I walked through their door! First, the coaches are absolutely incredible. They really connect with their classes and can scale exercises to cover those just starting out on a fitness journey, through to those with competitive fitness goals. Whatever your goal is, they work with the member to achieve it. As a start, I did their circuit/interval training class B/X, which was a terrific way to get in more aerobic and some weight lifting. After getting comfortable with this I ventured into a few cross fit classes. All the coaches took the time with me to help me learn the right form, critical to me staying injury free as I’ve been able to get much stronger! Highly recommend regardless of your age or current level of fitness!
Like a lot of people, I’m apprehensive when approaching a gym, let alone a Crossfit one. There is no reason to be nervous with Brick. All of the coaches are patient and invested in making sure you understand mechanics before you’re deadlifting 400lbs. The culture of the gym is not aggressive, like other places I’ve been to. The idea is to compete against yourself and not an Olympic weightlifter.
Brick Fitness Center offers different types of classes as others have mentioned, including a mobility class- which has been really helpful to me. There is a set workout for each class, but the coaches will scale things down for you either prior to the workout or during if they see you’re struggling. They’ll do it in a non-shaming way, too. I had been straining my back and injured myself. Now that I’ve been working on my core for lifting and I’m feeling a lot better.
I’m feeling better, looking better, and have met some rad people. I strongly suggest Brick for their classes, the culture, and the people.

LOVE going to Brick Fitness Center for BX and CrossFit classes! The workout is tough and lots of fun. The instructors are consistently on point with encouragement, energy, and most importantly guidance in the movements. The cool thing is that the instructors scale the movements and coaching to the skill and experience level of the member so that everybody in the class gets a great workout. Almost as important as the exercise experience, the camaraderie and sense of community are very positive. Nothing better after a great workout then celebrating, encouraging, and chatting with other members after the class. The coffee and smoothies are a plus too!
